What Goes Around, Comes…

There’s an interesting article over on Salon’s page at the moment. “You reap what you sow”: Historian Jon Meacham says Trump staff should expect to be publicly shunned by Bob Brigham. It seems that in a recent interview on MSNBC, presidential historian Jon Meacham offered a remarkably insightful interpretation of Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ ejection from a local restaurant. His take? The Trumpsters brought this on themselves and should expect things to get much worse.

He argues that presidents and their administration tend to set the tone of discourse for the rest of the culture. A civil, well-spoken, and well-mannered administration encourages a civil discourse in the larger society. By contrast, an Administration like Trump’s—which actively fetishizes rudeness, bullying, and incivility—encourages a society which is itself rude, bullying, and uncivil. Which, in turn, means that both the administration’s supporters and now its critics employ the same tactics as does Trump himself.

So, says Meacham, the Trumpsters should have seen this coming, and can expect things to get much worse for them as time goes on. It is a classic case of those who live by the snark, die by the snark.

The question, of course, is just how bad is it going to get? Yesterday, we did a piece on Hamilton Nolan’s thesis that we are just this side of revolutionary violence (see It’s Only Just Begun…Alas). Today, we learned that someone left an animal carcass…headless and partially burned…on the front porch of a Department of Homeland Security employee, apparently in protest of the “Zero Tolerance Policy” and the separation of children from their families at the border.

Let’s hope it doesn’t go further beyond this, but if it does, people need to keep in mind that the Right nurtured this monster from day one, and lovingly brought it into being…

Before it turned on them…
