In an extremely worrying development, the State Department has issued a security alert to Americans in Iraq and particularly those employed by the Embassy there. The notice reads in part, “The U.S. State Department has ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. Government employees from Iraq, both at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. Consulate in Erbil. Normal visa services at both posts will be temporarily suspended. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iraq.”
What prompted the alert is not clear, but recently the Trump Administration sent the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and B-52 bombers to the area to counter potential hostile acts by Iran. It will be remembered that Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton, has been pushing for a war with Iran for years, regardless of whether Iran really does anything hostile.
