Is this possible? Is it really possible? Is it possible that Trump supporters could be so idiotic? Apparently so. For it seems they are saying that John McCain’s brain cancer was a hoax, and his death all part of a vast conspiracy against real Americans.
No. Really. They are saying exactly that. Writing in the Washington Post, Dana Milbank reports that “according to a conspiracy theory network popular among some Trump boosters, when McCain supposedly died on Saturday, he did not succumb to cancer but took his own life to avoid being hauled off to Guantanamo Bay and put before a military tribunal for his longtime work helping Islamic State terrorists and others. (And before he died, he concealed his criminal ankle bracelet by wearing a medical boot on his leg.)”
This is, of course, insane. It is utterly mad. But without the innocence that comes with true madness. There is no excusing it. In their fury and their crudity, the Trumpsters have decided to utterly denigrate a great man’s memory, and turn him into some sort of traitor…this, while their popular hero is a genuine villain, and genuinely the head of a conspiracy of dunces.
And what are we to do? Alas, there is nothing we can do. These men and women will believe what they want to believe, no matter how much reason or logic or fact is presented them. Nothing will change them.
So, all that we may do, as members of the Resistance, is cherish the memory of John McCain, a conservative as conservatives once were, and hope that someday his like will once more claim the soul of the Right.
