Editor’s Note: Our friend William Albee recently received this email from New Mexico’s new Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham. He thinks we should share it as widely as possible.
William, let me be clear about one thing: There is no national security crisis at our southern border.
But President Trump continues to insist otherwise. He shut down our government for a record 35 days – and now he’s declared a national emergency to try to force construction of his border wall. After visiting border communities like Sunland Park and listening to families who live there, I can tell you firsthand that the consequences will be severe and lasting. Not only would the wall be useless and expensive to the taxpayer, it would stoke pernicious hate that has the potential to tear our democracy apart.
William, this is why you elected a Democratic Governor – so we could fight back against Trump’s attacks on our border communities here in New Mexico. Just a few days ago, I ordered the vast majority of National Guard troops at New Mexico’s border to withdraw – because our great state will not be part of President Trump’s reckless fear-mongering.
