The Founding Fathers Would Have Hated Trump

Trump, Sharks, Porn Stars…and the Founding Fathers

Having a hard day? In need of a smile? Or, maybe, in need of some extremely thoughtful insights? If so, pop over to Slate’s website and Virginia Heffernan’s hysterically funny (and deeply thoughtful) podcast, A Rot at the Core of the Republic:Trump’s corrupt administration is exactly what the Founding Fathers feared.

Heffernan begins her podcast (“Trumpcast”) with some quite funny observations on the Trump administration. She takes some well-aimed shots at the Drumpf’s marriage. That’s followed by a witty (and sad) fake interview with a young “shark,” responding to Trump’s comments about wiping out his kind.

Then, though, she interviews David Frum on his new book Trumpocracy. The two examine in the course of their conversation just how very awful Trump is, and how far removed he is from having anything like the qualities required to be a half-way decent president, or even just a decent human being.

Their conclusion? Trump is exactly the kind of creature that the Founding Fathers feared when they wrote the Constitution. He is, obviously, venial and greedy, and most of all a demagogue. But, more, says Frum, Trump personifies the sort of person who terrified the Founding Fathers—a president under the direct influence, and maybe the absolute control, of foreign powers.

That is rather terrifying.

However, Frum adds, that there may be some hope. Trump may, actually, have inspired reforms that will, for the better, remake our nation’s political culture.
