Powerful and scary article over on Salon that everyone should take a look at: The Supreme Court now works for the Republican party…and this Harvard law professor agrees by Matthew Rozsa. In it, Rosza reports that with Blackout Brett’s confirmation, the Supreme Court just became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party, which is to say of Donald Trump.
Rozsa quotes Laurence Tribe, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard Law School as saying that the Court has always been somewhat political, but it has historically managed to be at least a little bit even handed. Now, though that day is over. With the overly partisan actions of the present congress, which imposed a party hack on the Court regardless of the overwhelming evidence of his incompetence, the Supreme Court finished the transition from third branch of government to Trump’s servant.
What will this mean in the long run? Frankly, it is hard to see how the Court or indeed the current system of government can survive. We can only hope that a future American successor government will revamp the national judicial system so that it is genuinely what the Founders’ wanted it to be — i.e., a check on creatures like Trump.
