According to the Washington Post, the same Russian social media trolls who put Trump into the White House are also trying to keep him there by attacking Robert Mueller. In Russian disinformation teams targeted Robert S. Mueller III, says report prepared for Senate, the Post notes that according to two reports prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee, “The Russian operatives unloaded on Mueller through fake accounts on Facebook, Twitter and beyond, falsely claiming that the former FBI director was corrupt and that the allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election were crackpot conspiracies. One post on Instagram — which emerged as an especially potent weapon in the Russian social media arsenal — claimed that Mueller had worked in the past with “radical Islamic groups.”
The next question, of course, is whether the Senate — controlled by Republicans — have the spine required to act on these revelations and protect Mueller from Trump’s fury. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much sign of that kind of courage yet.
Let’s hope the GOP either loses control of the upper house of Congress, or gets an attack of decency real soon.
