In a fascinating display of ignorance, arrogance, and bigotry, Texas GOP representative Jonathan Stickland has attacked vaccines as “sorcery.” He also attacked a prominent Texas pediatrician on social media and disputed the validity of science in general, and medical science in particular.
The pediatrician had made a public statement about the need for parents to get their children vaccinated. Stickland responded with “Mind your own business” (i.e., don’t get involved in the vaccine issue). He also made the libertarian argument that doctors and scientists are just using government regulations to enrich themselves. USA Today quotes him as tweeting, “Make the case for your sorcery to consumers on your own dime. Like every other business…Quit using the heavy hand of government to make your business profitable through mandates and immunity. It’s disgusting.”
These statements are amazing to say the least. We wonder if, next up, Stickland will announce that volcanoes and earthquakes are just what geologists use to sell their services.
