One interesting development in the world of unconventional warfare: the US Government has constructed the R9X, a variant on the Hellfire missile that does not carry explosives. Rather, it has six, large, razor-sharp blades that deploy just before it impacts its target. If you’re unlucky enough to be that target, you are sliced to pieces.
Why build such a weapon? Well, because normal, high-explosive carrying missiles may kill their intended targets, but they may also take out several innocent civilians around them. It’s the kind of collateral damage that has made drone warfare and “targeted killing” so controversial. But a weapon like this, which is meant to bring pin-point death to its victims, is a lot more controllable.
The R9X — which has been called “the ninja bomb” and “the flying Ginsu”– has already been used several times. According the Newsweek, it was employed in January of this year to kill “Jamal al-Badawi—the suspected mastermind of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole” . It was also used to eliminate
What is certain is that the weapon is a potential game changer. It removes the bad guys, but leaves innocent bystanders unscathed. (When al-Marsi was killed, the weapon penetrated the roof of his car, destroyed him and his companion, but didn’t so much as smash the windshield of the vehicle.) And, while you can make an argument about whether or not assassination is a good thing, it is still hard to shed too many tears about the execution of Jamal al-Badawi and Ahmad Hsan Abu Khayr al-Masri, who would have almost certainly killed a good many more blameless people had they had the chance.
And who was responsible for the development of this most excellent weapon? A tough guy like Trump or John (“The Barbarian”) Bolton?
It was Barack Obama. The president the Right so loves to call a wimp and a traitor.
