Just once, we’d like to start this column by saying that there hadn’t been anything alarming or terrifying on the web lately. Unfortunately, so long as the Orange One is in office, it just ain’t gonna happen.
For example, The Washington Post is reporting that for the last year, Trump has declined to read the President’s Daily Brief, a written document that basically sums up everything our intelligence agencies know about the world. He doesn’t, you see, like to read. So he has other people brief him on what’s happening.
If that doesn’t ruin your day, very little will.
Or here’s another one. Writing in Mic, A.P. Joyce quotes White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly as saying that “more than 1 million United States immigrants were ‘too lazy to get off their asses’ and sign up for protection from the federal government.” Kelly’s idea seems to be that if “illegals” would just sign up now for Dreamer status, they wouldn’t have to worry. This, of course, is in spite of the fact that the program is in danger of being cut entirely, and that ICE seems to be extra eager to deport even green card holders.
So next time you’re hoping Kelly will keep Old Pumpkinhead in line…don’t count on it.
Meanwhile, over at Democracy Now, we have the story “As Paul Ryan Touts a Secretary’s $1.50 Weekly Pay Hike, Koch Bros. Reap $1.4B from GOP Tax Plan.” Yes, it seems that Ryan Rutabaga was proclaiming from the rooftops what a good deal working class people were getting from the Current GOP Plundering…while forgetting how vastly much more the obscenely rich were going to benefit.
At this point, you wonder. Are they really able to tell the difference between lie and truth any more?
And here’s a case of great minds working as one. Over at the Washington Post, columnist Richard Cohen writes that “Trump is a modern-day McCarthy.” We agree, but our own William B. Turner’s already made the connection. Check out his recent piece Bad Nixon, Bad McCarthy.
Speaking of McCarthy and McCarthite behavior, Betsy Woodruff Spencer Ackerman writing in the Daily Beast, note that “Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House intelligence committee, says he’s investigating the FBI and Justice Department” but he is refusing to tell Congress exactly what he’s looking for or what he’s finding.
I believe the last time we saw this, it was McCarthy holding up a briefcase full of “evidence” but refusing to open it.
And last, but hardly least for the day, there’s the Orange One’s demand for a full-scale military parade in his honor. You can find the grim details of the whole mess over in the Washington Post in “Trump’s ‘marching orders’ to the Pentagon: Plan a grand military parade” by Greg Jaffe and Philip Rucker.
Actually, maybe it is a good idea. Maybe the USA should offer him the biggest parade in history…on the condition that he leave the country immediately afterwards.
