“All politics is local,” said the late, great Tip O’Neill. And that’s true enough. Which means that if we are going to wrestle the fate of this nation away from the Crackpot Right, the Plutocrats, the Kakistocrats, and the outright fascists who are ruling us at the moment…we are going to have to start at the local level and work up.
For that reason, LiberalResistance.net is introducing with this issue a new policy. From time to time, we will be endorsing candidates in local races that we feel to offer real hope for the future.
Today, we’ll begin by endorsing Tim Keller, candidate for mayor of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Why Albuquerque? Well, LR Net’s writers are scattered all over the nation and the world, but Burque (that’s pronounced bur-key for you out-of-towners) is where we have what passes for our offices. So, this is home for us. And if you’re going to get local, you can’t get much more local than that.
Why Keller? Because he combines a lot of very good things in one package. On the one hand, he is a progressive with great liberal chops. He’s worked his ass off for years in the interests of the poor, the sick, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. That’s a pretty spectacular track record.
But wait. There’s more. If Keller is a progressive by temperament, he is no tax-and-spend liberal of the sort who haunts the dreams of conservatives everywhere. He is currently the state auditor, and he has a long history of ferreting out waste, fraud, and outright incompetence. He knows where the bodies…and the treasures…are buried, and he’s more than willing to dig up both for the public good.
Ergo, for us, at least, it looks like Keller’s the best candidate. Stay tuned, we’ll be posting more news about Keller and his run for office in future.
But here’s something else. If you have a favorite candidate in your area, running for some local office, give us a shout and tell us why s/he would be best for the job. We can’t promise we’ll endorse every candidate, but we’ll at least look at them. And, if all goes well, we’ll try to give them a bit of publicity.
So, let’s do it! Let’s make local mean liberal once again!
