On the off chance you missed it, Secretary of State Rex (“Rambo Pants”) Tillerson has announced that American troops will remain in Syria even though ISIS is officially defeated. In other words, we are going to have US troops on the ground, potentially facing off with Syrian troops and their allies from Russia and Iran.
To coin a phrase... WTF?
Cory A. Booker and Oona A. Hathaway have just written an excellent Op-Ed piece in the Times in which they argue quite eloquently that not only is this stupid, it is also probably against the law and, indeed, un-Constitutional. It seems that der Drumpf and Rex The Wonder Pony lack any authorization to take this kind of unilateral action without consulting Congress.
Yes, presidents using their executive power to wage war without an official declaration from Congress has been a long standing problem, but, say Booker and Hathaway, the situation with Trump and Syria is uniquely troubling because there was never even a hint of consultation with Capitol Hill.
They result, they say, is that we are one step closer to an authoritarian system in which the balance of powers are only a fiction.
