Yesterday we wrote about how new polling indicates that the vast majority of Americans support a woman’s right to choose, and that this could be a problem for the GOP, which seems hell bent for leather to overturn Roe v. Wade. Well, guess what? Turns out the majority of Republicans support pro-choice legislation, too.Writing in Newsweek, Alexandra Hutzler notes that
The kicker? This is happening at exactly the same moment that the GOP, beholden to its more extreme supporters, is acting to shut down reproductive rights for women. Writes Hutzler, “A majority of Republican voters do not support overturning the nation’s landmark Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion—but there is little sign of that from those representing the GOP, either in Congress or the White House.”
Again, the question is, how long can this go on? Clearly, the GOP, or rather the Trumpian Party, no longer represents the wishes of the majority of its registered voters. Instead, it represents the biases of certain Evangelical Christians, White Nationalists, and the obscenely wealthy men and women who are pulling strings in the background.
We can only hope that, eventually, the majority of Republican voters will unite and take their party back from the thugs who’ve stolen it from them…or, that they will defect to the Democratic Party and help us put sanity back into American politics.
