Vice says that a new study suggests that the end of the world is coming, and quick — by no later than 2050 — unless we get serious about stopping global warming. In New Report Suggests ‘High Likelihood of Human Civilization Coming to an End’ Starting in 2050, Nafeez Ahmed notes that a report published by the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration (an Australian policy institute) says that human civilization must act, and act now.
The report holds that “On our current trajectory…planetary and human systems [are] reaching a ‘point of no return’ by mid-century, in which the prospect of a largely uninhabitable Earth leads to the breakdown of nations and the international order.”
The report is made all the more frightening by the fact that among its authors is “Ian Dunlop, a former senior executive of Royal Dutch Shell who previously chaired the Australian Coal Association.” It was also endorsed by “retired Admiral Chris Barrie—Chief of the Australian Defence Force from 1998 to 2002.”
The paper does say we have a chance of changing things, but only if we are willing to work on global warming. Unfortunately, the GOP with its ongoing cries of “climate change hoax” and “junk science” isn’t likely to let that happen.
