We know that Trump has picked Mick Mulvaney to be his acting Chief of Staff. But, there’s more to the story. Before Mulvaney was offered the job (at least for the moment) Trump seems to have approached Chris Christie, at least according to The Hill.
This is amusing on so many levels. First, Christie did everything short of groveling to get into the Trump administration back in 2016. But, then, Trump dumped him like a drum of toxic waste from the Jersey shore. Now, though, 45 has had to go crawling to Christie to get him to maybe, pretty please, take a White House role. (Did Christie chortle when he refused? Be interesting to find out.)
Second, Christie is showing that he has some common sense, after all. The fact that he knows not to get involved with the Trumpster Dumpster fire indicates that he’s learned his lesson in the last two years. He has seen that linking your fate to Trump’s is to, most probably, go down with him. The question is why it took him so long to figure out the obvious.
Finally, that Trump has had to go to Christie — a man who is not loved by anyone in the White House — in a failed attempt to find a chief of staff goes to show how desperate the White House is becoming. The Trumpsters have gone beyond scraping the bottom of the barrel. They are now digging into the ground below the barrel.
