The other day we read an article in HuffPost, Brazil Is About To Show The World How A Modern Democracy Collapses by Travis Waldron. In it, Waldron looks at how Brazil’s current present, Jair Bolsonaro, “the Trump of the Tropics,” is effectively killing off democracy in his country – and showing the rest of the world how it is done.
Specifically, says Waldron, the despot’s new tool is the election rather than the coup. Where historically South American republics have been overthrown by militaries and strongmen, this time the people themselves voted to kill off their representative government.
It is a model that was established, of course, by “populists” like Trump, but the real warning of Bolsonaro is that voters can turn against democracy if it “hasn’t delivered.” If it doesn’t seem to provide safety, security, and prosperity, then democracy is doomed.
This is important to keep in mind when the US elections of 2020 come around.
