Below, you will find a video in which the award winning journalist, writer, and social Christian theorist Chris Hedges interviews Richard Wolff, who is among the most important Marxist economists and philosophers of our day. They talk about the decline of American capitalism, and the all too likely demise of American society. Watching it would seem like a fascinating way to spend 30 minutes or so, and that was why our friend, and frequent Liberal Resistance contributor, Chris Madsen brought it to our attention.
But, there’s a rub. The video is from RT, formerly Russia Today, and which is wholly owned and (doubtlessly) controlled by Moscow. So, it frankly isn’t clear to us whether our readers would benefit by watching it.
We’ve gone back and forth on this. RT is not a place where any one should go for their daily dose of news and information. It is undoubtedly in the business of presenting Russia’s preferred slant on the world to Americans in general. This means that it can be so ideologically driven that it makes Fox News look like the London Times. And you have to suspect that its programming is meant to spread the same kind of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that Russia so effectively conveyed through social media in 2016.
On the other hand, Chris Madsen has pointed out that the video is interesting and significant for two reasons. First, it gives us an idea about what the Russians would like us to believe. And, second, Hedges and Wolff are genuinely gifted and interesting people whose analysis of American failings as a culture and an economy might well be worth hearing.
So, below, you may find the video. Take caution, however. Remember that Wolff, while brilliant as a Neo-Marxist, is not a political scientist. He, after all, endorsed Jill Stein and the Green Party in 2016. And, as we know now, Jill Stein was a favorite of the Russians, and she may have siphoned off just enough votes from Clinton to put Trump in the White House.
